This restaurant may be named Sweet Georgia Brown, but it goes by the reputation as 'the pride of South Dallas.' Located in the heart of Dallas' Oak Cliff, this restaurant serves some of the best soul food in Dallas -- for finger-licking good prices.
Don’t let the rather run-down exterior and shabby interior of this family-style restaurant influence your taste buds. While the ambience might not provide the best setting for a romantic date, it is most definitely great fun for kids and large groups. The food is a true representation of the American Deep South. Also, don’t expect the cook to skimp on the plate size; one serving is more than enough for two people! But, then again, this food is so good for the soul that you might not want to share! While the restaurant doesn’t take reservations, visitors should arrive early. As Dallas residents like to eat out almost any night of the week, at supper time, you can expect the lines to curve around the block at this Oak Cliff favorite. The staff is not the most considerate and doesn’t seem to possess the most accurate memory, but once you get your plate, all complaints go out the window. It is truly 'lip smackin' good.' As one might assume, Sweet Georgia Brown’s traditional down-home menu specializes in barbecue. The mighty meats include succulent ribs, deep fried pork chops and brazened brisket. The pan-fried chicken is also a must have juicy eat, but don’t forget that famous fresh fish: catfish. The meat cuts may be enormous, but don’t let this frighten you away from ordering the phenomenal side dishes like collard greens, okra and cornbread. Guests who aren’t already stuffed to the brim might also enjoy in some fantastic desserts like sweet potato pie, or even better, a complimentary peach cobbler. The restaurant doesn’t have a liquor license, so don’t expect after-hours boozing, but they do play jazz and gospel tunes that will lull you into a nirvana-like food coma. |
