In the 1980's, through his development and ownership of real estate deals, Ross Perot became a powerful force within Texas. This early success also empowered Perot to gain majority ownership of the Dallas Mavericks, a newly-founded NBA franchise at that time, although Perot’s decision was largely based on his desire to develop the real estate that surrounded the basketball arena.
Throughout its history, the Dallas Mavericks have won a variety of impressive titles. According to Forbes Magazine, the Mavericks are the third most valuable basketball franchise in the United States, valued at approximately $463 million, surpassed only by the New York Knicks and the Los Angeles Lakers. Prior to the Mavs arrival, the last professional basketball team in Dallas had been the ABA franchise Chaparrals, which subsequently moved to San Antonio in 1973 to become the San Antonio Spurs. The Mavericks name was inspired by the late-50’s TV series Maverick, starring James Garner. Garner was even part of the ownership group in 1980, at the time of the team’s inception. The Dallas Mavericks are in the NBA’s Western Conference, Southwest Division. The team is currently owned by Mark Cuban and the team now plays at the American Airlines Center. The Mavericks D-League affiliate is the Tulsa 66ers. Donnie Nelson is the Mavericks General Manager and their new head coach is Rick Carlisle. In the nearly three-decade history of the Mavs they, as of yet, have won no NBA Championships, but they have won one Conference title in 2006 and two Division titles in 1997 and 2007. All the information pertaining to the team, its history, players, schedule, ticket availability and prices can be found on the Dallas Maverick’s website. |
