Nancy Lieberman will forever be connected to Dallas basketball. While she was the star player for the Dallas Diamonds, she and her team drew more fans than for Mavericks’ games. After her first season in Dallas, Lieberman earned WBL MVP honors in 1981 and led the team to the 1984 WABA Championship.
Everywhere she goes, her credentials go with her: United States Olympic Medal Winner, WNBA Coach, Hall of Famer, ESPN Commentator and successful motivational speaker to girls, boys, men and women. Not to mention being the first female player in history to play in a men's league with the USBL in 1986. In 2004, Nancy Lieberman, again in Dallas, became the Head Coach for the National Women’s Basketball League’s (NWBL) Dallas Fury and guided them all the way to the championships that season. Started over twenty-five years ago in Dallas, Nancy Lieberman continues to host a variety of basketball camps in the Dallas/Fort Worth area for boys and girls (ages: 5-17). These basketball camps offer children the opportunity to learn basketball fundamentals, while building self-esteem and confidence on and off the court. In conjunction with every paid camp available is a two-hour free basketball clinic hosted by Nancy Lieberman. Information for all of Nancy’s events can be found on her official website: www.NancyLieberman.com. Even a visit there is an inspiration to anyone who hopes to overcome barriers…the theme music that starts up is Helen Reddy’s I Am Woman. Nancy Lieberman’s legacy will always include her accomplishments in Dallas, both professionally and personally. At a time when girls didn’t necessarily play a physical and aggressive style of basketball, Nancy did, and she brought that drive with her to every court she’s visited. |
