In the cliffhanger of season 2, J.R. was shot. Of course, even if he wasn't liked very much, the police had an obligation to try solve the mystery of who shot him. In the beginning of season 3, Dallas used 3 different episodes to bring the story to conclusion.

"No More Mr Nice Guy, Part 1" aired on November 7, 1980 and shows a cleaning woman discovering the body of J.R. in his office. He is near death and taken to the hospital for surgery. The majority of this episode centers on finding evidence and hoping that J.R. survives.

"No More Mr. Nice Guy, Part 2" shows Bobby taking temporary responsibility of Ewing Oil. Sue Ellen is having guilt that maybe she is the one to have shot her husband. She tries unsuccessfully to prevent a surgery that might allow J.R. to walk again or could take his life permanently. Difficult choice, that one. Suspects are being rounded up and questioned to see who is responsible.

In the episode "Nightmare", J.R. survives the shooting, but of course hates his condition of being paralyzed. Even from the hospital, he is trying to intervene on Bobby's ability to be president of Ewing Oil. Finally, a clue in the investigation about the shooting surfaces as Miss Ellie finds the gun used in the attack. Early clues point to someone in the immediate family. Sue Ellen suffers from nightmares that she is the guilty person; her fingerprints are on the gun. Did she do it? The answer to the question kept everyone in suspense.
