"Ewing Inferno" is the name of the cliffhanger for season 5 of Dallas. So far, the show had survived the near fatal accidents of Pamela and Sue Ellen, the shooting of J.R., and Cliff Barnes attempted suicide. What more drama and suspense could be coming in the direction of the Dallas faithful?

During the turbulent times of Sue Ellen's marriage, she begins to drink again. Once again, she has another accident while driving, but this time it is not a danger to her life, but to the life of Ray Krebbs' nephew. The driver of the other car, Walt Driscol, was a sworn enemy to J.R.

As the season is finishing, J.R. is home with his wife and son. Sue Ellen has a drunken fit and throws a bottle of wine, but nothing serious occurs. She takes some medication from her doctor and then goes to bed. J.R. is alone with his thoughts.

Ray Krebbs, who blames J.R. for causing his nephew to be in the hospital, decides to take the fight to him at the house. The two begin to have a violent confrontation and J.R. throws a candle holder in the direction of Ray. He misses, however the candle holder knocks over a burning candle in the hallway. Immediately, a fire breaks out. Ray and J.R. continue the fight, each trying to kill the other.

Sue Ellen and her son are sleeping upstairs, unaware of the fire and finally J.R. manages to get away from Ray. As he runs upstairs to his family, screaming their names, Ray awakens from being knocked out in the fight. He is unable to help, and as the season ends, the viewer is left with the image of Southfork burning to the ground.
