The question that had all of Dallas fans talking since March 21, 1980 was...well, by now, you already know the question. But, if you are a new reader to this series column, the question was “Who shot J.R.?”. On November 21, 1980, the answer was to be revealed to the viewing audience.

To increase the tension, the start of season 3 of Dallas gave 3 preliminary episodes with emergency surgery for J.R., police investigations, and total chaos for the Ewing family. It's fairly easy to suggest the writers were trying to bait the hook, hoping for an equally impressive number of Nielsen ratings.

As the episode, “Who Done It?” begins, Sue Ellen's fingerprints had been discovered on the gun used in the shooting, and now she was sitting in jail after being arrested. The rest of the Ewing family is convinced she is guilty and decides she needs to suffer the consequences by staying in jail.

Unknown to her, a stranger would come to her assistance and pay the bail. Sue Ellen, needing some solace, turns to her sister, Kristen, to get through her loneliness.

Continuing to feel the guilt, Sue Ellen begins hypnosis sessions with her psychiatrist, Dr. Elby. Through these sessions, Sue Ellen is able to remember the events leading to the attempted murder of her husband.

The plot unfolds as Sue Ellen remembers going to the apartment of Kristen. Sue Ellen is very drunk and has the gun with her. Kristen gives her another drink, but Sue Ellen passes out and Kristen puts her in her car. Afterwards, Kristen takes the gun, shoots J.R. and places the gun in the Ewing home to frame Sue Ellen. When J.R. discovers it is Kristen, he says nothing because she might be pregnant with his child. This episode earned the 2nd highest rating in TV shows, with 53.3% market share of viewers.
