In my first writings about the television series Dallas, I took a more simple approach, choosing to give small facts and figures, and character bios. Now for a little adventure. Yes, we know that Dallas is set in Texas and oil is the reason for everything. But what if Dallas was in a different state and Jock, J.R. and Bobby needed a different way to earn their millions?
Would the show still have been a success? Doubtful, but I want to explore these ideas. The following scenarios are only the opinion of the writer. 1. Alaska, Salmon Fishing 2. Iowa, Farming Equipment 3. Nebraska, Corn (with equipment from Iowa) 4. Oklahoma, The University of Oklahoma football team 5. Tennessee, The country music industry 6. California, Computers and Silicon Valley 7. North Carolina, Nascar racing 8. New York, ACLU 9. New Jersey, Dairy cows 10. Nevada, Hotel and casino development 11. Florida, Alligator wrestling 12. Washington, Boeing airlines 13. Washington D.C. , the entire United States government Well, as we can plainly see, these other states and industries just might not have the same type of charisma and power that comes with Texas. There are other television series that have their setting in Texas, such as Walker Texas Ranger and Houston Knights (which had a paltry 31 episodes), but they fell far short of the glory of Dallas. And there are already way too many movies, shows, and cartoons demonstrating the uselessness of government. Summary? Only the city of Dallas, Texas could've provided all the madness that we needed to satisfy our greeds and lusts. |
