There are unforeseen incidents that occur in every professional's life. They are commonly referred to as "Acts of God". These are the trials that seem to occur at the most inconvenient of times, and Dallas had their fair share. How did they work with these incidents? Well, they had to move forward and find ways to overcome them. Here are a few incidents which the series encountered.
Prior to the pilot show of Dallas, there had been a snowstorm and so, of course, the initial scenes included the snow on the ground. But, the following day, the snow had melted away and several tons of gypsum were trucked in to resemble the snow. But the gypsum would turn pink on the film and needed to be replaced. After this, another snowstorm hit the Dallas area. The summer heat in Texas can be very strong, passing the 100 degree mark on a regular basis. The cast would film in full-costume and make-up and many of them suffered from heat exhaustion. Eventually, experience taught them how to stay out of the blazing heat and seek the comfort of air conditioning. Women were a vital part of every episode, and the women of Dallas had real lives too. Both Charlene Tilton, who played the role of Lucy Ewing, and Morgan Brittney, who played the role of Katherine Wentworth, became pregnant during the course of the series. They were filmed in situations disguising their pregnancies in accordance with the needs of the story line. Sadly, actors are not immune to the more serious sides of life, illness and death. Barbara Bel Geddess, the original Miss Ellie, needed heart surgery, so she was written out of the script for some time. Jim Davis, who played Jock Ewing, suffered from cancer. Eventually the cancer would overcome him, but the character of Jock was given full respect, therefore allowed to leave the series with dignity. Jock Ewing was not replaced. |
